You Can Afford to Adopt

Five years ago, my career was going well. I was flying to Europe in Business Class every other week and staying in the finest hotels in the capitals of Europe. I was negotiating multi-million dollar sales of international businesses. I was six years away from a very comfortable retirement. But my heart was with the children in the ghettos of Houston.

My company offered an early retirement package for anyone over fifty years old. There was no way that the offer made sense financially. I agreed to take the offer as soon as the sale that I was currently working on was completed.

My wife and I had prayed about the decision and we decided that we would trust God with the dreams that He had planted in our hearts. The Bible says that we should commit the things we do to God, and those plans will succeed. We did not know how we would do it, but we stepped out in faith.

In prayer, I was certain that God had told me to look for a six bedroom house and raise the money to pay for it. I do not hear God that clearly very often. But on this occasion, I did. I thought that such a house would be too expensive and wondered if God really wanted me to beg people for money.

It was almost time to retire. One evening, I was chatting on an airplane with one of the principals of the company that I had been dealing with. I told him that I was taking an early retirement as soon as our transaction closed. He wanted to know why I was leaving, obviously thinking about the financial ramifications.

I told him that my wife and I had broken hearts for poor children and that we were going to try to make a difference. He asked me if I had a wild dream. I told him that we wanted to own and operate a house for children. I will never forget his answer. He said that I should let him know when we were ready to proceed because he would pay for the house. He had a heart for what we planned to do.

A few months later, he wired the money to my bank account. He made it possible for us to focus on our new children and not worry about finances. We own a six bedroom house on three acres in the country. Our plans are succeeding. If you have thoughts about adopting children and fear you cannot afford it, please submit your plans to a higher authority and see what happens.
