Have Married Couples Got It Wrong?

For married couples the age of having children has gone up dramatically. These days many couples are leaving it later, till their thirties before even considering having children. In the push to have it all and make sure they buy a house and get the house all set up, before having children, as many are doing, are they doing their offspring a disservice? Recent reports conducted in the USA and in Australia claim that children of older fathers have a lower IQ. And it seems that the older the father is, the lower his child will score in intelligence tests, … Continue reading

Does Your Boss Have Kids?

If so, do you find that the status of “parent” makes him or her more sympathetic when your daycare calls demanding that you pick up your puking, feverish child NOW… and NOW is 10 a.m.? How does your boss react when you consistently leave the office at 4:30 on the dot to pick up your children from their after school program while the rest of your colleagues remain at the office until 6 or 7 p.m.? Does your boss feel your pain as you struggle to juggle career and family or does he or she resent your late mornings and … Continue reading

Month in Review: May in the Adoption Blog, Part One

This month I reported on several conversations I’ve had with my kids. Three of them were basically the “how babies are made” conversations, humorous but revealing insights into what my kids thought at different ages. You can read what I responded at each age and decide if you do, or don’t, want to base my answers on yours! First I had to deal with my older son’s questions about babies and his shock to realize that not all of them (including himself!) were Korean. This story is told in Where Babies Come From, or, Don’t Fall Asleep on an Airplane. … Continue reading

911 Abuse

As a former television reporter, every once and a while I had the rare opportunity to cover the elusive positive news story. The glitter hearts/puppies/rainbows/unicorn pieces typically manifested themselves in side of the highway births that yielded healthy babies, multi-million dollar lottery winners and EMT saves dog trying to save owner trying to save cat from rushing flood waters. However, the positive stories that had the greatest impact on me as a single, yet dating, TV reporter were the ones that involved kids whose calls to 911 actually helped save the lives of their loved ones. I’ll never forget the … Continue reading

Changes in Marriage in USA

The other day I touched on some of the changes that have occurred with woman and work over generations. Of course this has had a huge impact on marriage as well. Looking back to the early seventies, and in particular 1972, here are some of the differences the women’s movement has made in marriage. These statistics are taken from the Time magazine article by Nancy Gibbs based on –’a statistical look back at the journey of American Women,’ by Andréa Ford and Deidre Van Dyk. In 1972 women over the age of 15 who were married was 62%. These days … Continue reading

Gisele Bundchen–Loving Stepmother or Insensitive Troublemaker

She’s a drop dead gorgeous multi-millionaire with a super star new husband, and now women of the world have one more reason to hate supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Apparently, marriage has made the rich (rhymes with witch) more arrogant than ever. If you missed the headlines (and the thousands of subsequent Internet posts), Bundchen is speaking out for the first time about being more than just a stepmom to John Edward Thomas Moynahan, the 18-month-old love child of her new hubby New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his ex-girlfriend model-actress Bridget Moynahan. In the latest Vanity Fair issue, Bundchen let … Continue reading

A Parent’s Favorite Day

Yesterday was my favorite day of the year. It wasn’t my birthday or anniversary. I didn’t win the lottery or score a kiss from Matt Damon. Heck, I didn’t even get a pass on cooking, laundry or vacuuming. What I did get is something no parent can put a price tag on—-extra time. An entire hour. Sixty glorious minutes. A bonus 3600 seconds. What parent doesn’t dream of having a 25-hour day? Goodness knows most of us find a way to squeeze 30 hours of work in a typical 24-hour day. So why wouldn’t we celebrate an extra hour? Thank … Continue reading

Would You Allow Your 15-Year-Old Daughter to Date a 20-Year-Old Guy?

If you are Billy Ray Cyrus not only do you give your daughter your blessing on the relationship, but you also pat yourself on the back for setting her up. Fifteen-year-old tween sensation Miley Cyrus may be staying mum on the exact status of her relationship with 20-year-old “guy pal” Justin Gaston, but her self-proclaimed protective pop Billy Ray had no problem flapping his lips on TV’s “Access Hollywood” earlier this week. The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer spoke to reporters at his daughter’s early Sweet 16 birthday blow out at Disneyland Sunday night (her actual birthday is November 23rd) and … Continue reading

“If I had a Baby, I Would Keep It”

Discussions with eight-year-old Meg seem to be coming thick and fast lately. Meg came into the room while I was watching an early episode (I think the first) of the recent PBS documentary Carrier. This is a ten-episode look at the lives of the men and women serving aboard a Navy aircraft carrier during a six-month deployment. In this episode, one young sailor, about nineteen, reveals to his bunkmates that his girlfriend is pregnant, and that he learned this just a couple of weeks before shipping out. (Okay, I should have turned off the TV when Meg entered the room. … Continue reading

Courthouse Genealogy

The first time I remember feeling the Spirit was when I learned that families could be sealed together for all of eternity. It should not be surprising, then, that I have a deep love of genealogy and truly enjoy researching my family tree. As a young mom, however, I have restricted most of my efforts thus far to the internet. A recent courthouse trip – my first – taught me a few lessons. For years, I have found nothing but a solid brick wall in regards to my great-great-great grandparents. I did not even know their name, only that of … Continue reading
