For this week's Wednesday's Child I want to talk to you about AdoptUSKids.org If you are not familiar with this website, it is a national registry of waiting children who are in the foster care system. The kids on the site are not all of the kids available in the US by any means. They are just kids whose social workers felt that placing them on this listing would help them find families.

AdoptUSKids offers a search function were you can specify the child's age, gender, nationality and other factors. A list is then generated showing kids who match the child profile you have selected.

Individuals with a current homestudy can register on AdoptUSKids and then inquire about children they think might be a good fit for their family. If you don't have a homestudy you will not be able to register, but you can still browse the listings and many families are motivated to get a homestudy because of the profiles they have viewed on the website. Most of the children on AdoptUSKids are special needs kids for one reason or another. A large number of them are older kids since statistically this is a group that waits a long time for a family. Children may also have physical or emotional special needs that a potential adoptive family will need to consider. Your social worker is a great resource to help you determine if a certain child would fit well in your family.

AdoptUSKids also offers a lot of great resources including articles and stories from both adoptive families and from children who were adopted.

Take a moment to visit AdoptUsKids.org and consider adopting one of these special children from foster care.
