The Day the World Stood Still

I still remember vividly the day those towers fell. I was only 12, but I remember that feeling of fear that filled my parent’s faces as they heard the news as the first plane hit. I heard them question each other wondering if it might have been an accident, until 17 minutes later the second tower was hit. We were on our way to school. Every television was on, as we watched the attack that day. As children we feared what this would mean for us. We could hardly comprehend what was happening. Now looking back 11 years later we … Continue reading

Too Much of a Good Thing

I didn’t know there was such a thing but apparently there are fitness enthusiasts who can actually exercise too much. In fact, there are people out there who almost break down when they miss a day of exercise. While that sounds like a better struggle than what I sometimes have, it is a real concern for some. In fact, people can have an unhealthy obsession with working out. They can also deplete the energy that exercise is supposed to increase because they are doing too much. And pushing yourself too far in your workout routine can also lead to injuries. … Continue reading

Are Those Vital Records Playing Hard to Get? Try These Tips

If you do genealogy research, you know that vital records such as birth, death, and marriage records, are a very important source of information. Many of these records are kept by various state agencies, and the policies and procedures for obtaining them vary by state. Unfortunately, they can sometimes be hard to access given the amount of bureaucracy and red tape that is involved. The good news is that there are some alternative ways to get the information that you would get from vital records which are much easier to get your hands on. Do not let a snag in … Continue reading

Sometimes I Need a Time-Out Too!

As a single parent it isn’t uncommon to feel like you’ve bitten off more than you could chew. It’s a lot to take on and there’s no one there to pick up the slack. I often find myself taking on more than I can handle. I push myself to the limit and throw myself into complete and utter chaos because somewhere along the line I convinced myself that I had to be supermom. Maybe it was because I felt guilty for getting divorced. Maybe it was because I was trying to prove that I wasn’t a failure. Either way, I’ve … Continue reading

How Sick is Too Sick?

As a single parent it is hard to take off work when your child is sick. You save your days up just in case there is a real emergency. But how can you tell when you should really keep your child home from school or daycare? Should you keep them home even if they have a cold? Here are some rules to live by when it comes to your child being sick. Is your child’s fever higher than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit? If your child’s fever is 100.4 or higher that usually indicates that their body is trying to fight some … Continue reading

It’s Hard to Find Health Care Without Health Insurance

My experiences today are a good example of what millions of uninsured Americans are dealing with. I believe I have a sinus infection, and wanted to be seen by a doctor. I don’t have health insurance. As a result, I ended up calling several places before I could get an appointment, (and no one would tell me what the visit to the doctor will cost me). I am someone who has severe, chronic, allergies, (to food, to environmental allergens, to animals, and to a variety of substances that can make my skin break out in hives). Many of the people … Continue reading

Are You Making Things Harder on Yourself?

Still in a turkey coma? I wish I was, too much cleaning and decorating going on at my house. Remember the good old days when Mom just made everything magically appear and all you had to do was enjoy? When I was growing up the tradition was that Santa put the tree up on Christmas Eve. Looking back I’m not sure if that made things harder or easier. Especially when my mother was a single mother. It’s so hard to get everything ready all by yourself. I can’t imagine how hard that was to do alone. Get the kids to … Continue reading

Trying To Catch Up

Ever feel like if you could just get one more hour in the day you might be able to get it all done? I feel that way most days and it’s usually the housework that is the biggest time sucker. I try to be organized, I try to have a routine for everything but sometimes that routine gets thrown off. This past weekend my niece got married. It was a beautiful wedding. It also sucked up most of my weekend. We had the rehearsal dinner on Friday night, and then when I got home I had three different kinds of … Continue reading

Too Attached

Break ups are never easy, even if you know it is right. There are still emotional ties to that person for not only you, but for your children as well. In many ways it can feel like going through a divorce all over again. It is normal for you and your children to feel many of the same feelings of grief and abandonment that you did when you first got divorced. It can be discouraging for you and devastating for your children. Children form attachments quickly and easily. If you begin dating someone be aware of the relationship your children … Continue reading
