Tragic Death of a Baby–Why Not Adoption Instead?

News sources are now reporting that a 19-year-old Wisconsin woman is in jail for neglect causing the death of her young infant. Indra Book stopped breastfeeding her baby and allowed her to die. A friend of hers is charged with covering up the child’s death. The LaCrosse County District Attorney told the media that the parents could have given up the baby under the state’s safe haven laws. This would have brought the baby to safety while maintaining the anonymity of the parents. There is much that is still unknown about this case. The mother has given conflicting statements. The … Continue reading

Celebrity Milestones: Life and Death

LIFE “Shark” star Jeri Ryan is acquiring a ferocious appetite. Not, for underlings, but for greasy French fries and with good reason… The actress just announced that she is pregnant with her second child. Ryan wed French chef Christophe Emé in his hometown outside Angers, France less than three months ago and now the couple is preparing to add to their family. Ryan also has a 12-year-old son, Alex, from a previous relationship. According to her publicist, the 39-year-old actress is due in March 2008 and is “thrilled beyond words.” DEATH On a much sadder note actress Miyoshi Umeki, who … Continue reading

A Little Tighter

In light of the horrific events yesterday I had to write a few words expressing my feelings as a mother. When I learned of the tragedy in Connecticut my heart sank into the pit of my stomach. These little children were my son’s age. Each time I looked at him I nearly broke into tears. This is every parent’s worst nightmare. I cannot imagine the intensity of the pain those parents are feeling as they are tucking their babies into bed tonight and finding that one of those beds will forever be empty. The loss of a child is by … Continue reading

Summer Tragedies

Summertime and the living is easy. Or at least it should be. For school kids, summer should be a time of Popsicles, playing and pretending. It’s not a time of death. Or at least it shouldn’t be. Unfortunately, in the past two weeks, two local kids have experienced tragic ends to their lives, and the official start of summer doesn’t start for another few hours. On Sunday, an 8-year-old Milwaukee area boy died from injuries he sustained in a freak bike accident. According to police, the boy was biking near a family member’s house on Father’s Day evening when he … Continue reading

Celebrities Who Have Lost Children

As I read the headlines about Mike Tyson’s daughter, Exodus, dying after being strangled by the cord on a treadmill, it made me realize that celebrities don’t always have the charmed lives we believe they do. Many have suffered what many consider the worst thing that can happen – the loss of a child. One of the most recent celebrity child tragedy was that of John and Kelly Travolta’s son Jett, who died of a seizure in January 2009, but there have been plenty more. Some were results of accidents, some of overdoses, and some of diseases, but all were … Continue reading

Nebraska Safe Haven Law Now Applies Only to Newborns

Nebraska state legislators have changed the state’s “safe haven” law, which allowed a parent to leave a child with a hospital employee without fear of facing charges, to apply only to infants in the first month of life. Last spring, Nebraska became the last U.S. state to enact a safe haven law. These laws are intended to prevent frightened new parents from abandoning the baby in an unsafe place or from hiding and possibly killing the baby. In 49 states, the law specifies the age of the infants the law applies to. In some states the law applies to newborns … Continue reading

Body of Jennifer Hudson’s Nephew Found?

It seems as if there may be no good news at all in the case of the Jennifer Hudson family attack. After the Oscar winning actress’ mother Darnell and brother Jason were found shot to death in their home on Friday, authorities announced that her seven year old nephew Julian was missing from the South Side home in Chicago. Police put out an Amber Alert for Julian, saying that it was believed the child may have been taken away in a white Suburban SUV with the license plate number X584859. Jennifer, who had to identify both the bodies of her … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: “Sex and the City” Turns Back the Clock and Croc Hunter’s Mini Me

Have you ever wondered what Carrie Bradshaw was like as a teen? (And I’m not talking about Sarah Jessica Parker’s stint on TV’s Square Pegs.) Sex and the City is going back in time thanks to creator Candace Bushnell. The author recently announced that she is writing a series of literary prequels featuring her most famous character, Carrie Bradshaw. The pair of teen novels will reportedly focus on the high school adventures of Bradshaw, (who was portrayed by Sarah Jessica Parker on the big and small screen) and be named The Carrie Diaries. Bushnell says that she is concentrating on … Continue reading
