The Adoption Home Study Process, Part 2 - Supporting Documents

There are a number of supporting documents that are required of a couple or person who are going through the Home Study Process. It's a good idea to collect these documents early on, so you are not scrambling before your social worker comes to complete the Interview portion of the Home Study. The agency that is providing the Home Study will often provide you with a checklist to use to help keep tract of the documents you have and will need to get. If the agency does not provide a list, it is good idea to write up a list, to help keep you better organized.

Supporting Documents that you will need:

Copy of Birth Certificates: If you don't have your Birth Certificate, you can go to Birth-Certificates.net, which will tell you the steps you need to take to get your Birth Certificate from the state where you were born. Drivers License Marriage Certificate Divorce Decree Employee Verification Letters showing date of hire and salary. Last years Tax Forms: The financial documents are to show that you are financially stable and can support a child within your budget. There is not a minimum amount of money that a family needs to have or make to be able to adopt a child. Physician Letter: You will need to have a letter from your Health Practitioner showing that you are in good health. Character References: You need to collect a number of reference letters from friends, families, employers, or others who you have a close relationship with. Who you choose should know you well as individual and a couple. They should also be able to comment on your interactions with children. Some agencies will have a specific form with questions that will need to be filled out by your references while other agencies may ask for a free standing letter. Disciplinary Agreement: Some agencies will ask you to sign an agreement that you will not use hitting or spanking as a form of discipline.
