Settling In To Our New Family Arrangement

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Dylan was going through some tough adjustments as he became a big brother. Now that Blake is almost seven weeks old, we have all had a chance to get used to the way our family is now and things are settling down a bit. I am proud of how far Dylan has come in the past few weeks as far as understanding and working through his feelings about the experience. One thing that I am very happy about is that he no longer thinks that I am going to go away and … Continue reading

The Third Week Post-Partum

My third week post-partum began on the cusp of New Years and New Years Eve festivities. In the midst of healing and napping, combined with my every day house hold tasks, I some how found the time and motivation to finally buy the boots I wanted to get while I was pregnant. Perhaps it was a good thing that I waited until after my daughter was born. The boots became my first clothing purchase post-partum and my first mini celebration (I am still not ready to try on skinny jeans). It is rather strange how buying clothes gives a person … Continue reading

Genealogy Websites to Stop Listing Social Security Numbers

Some genealogy websites have decided to stop listing Social Security numbers online. Those numbers can be really useful for genealogists who are working on their family trees. Unfortunately, those numbers can also be used by thieves who want to commit identity theft. One of the resources that genealogy websites use is something called The Social Security Death Index. Insurance companies use it too, but not for the same reason that genealogists use it. Insurers who sell life insurance use the Death Master File database to determine if policyholders have passed away. Genealogists use it to locate the Social Security number … Continue reading

Family History of the Thanksgiving Turkey

As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us are thinking about purchasing a very important part of our Thanksgiving feast – the turkey. Have you ever wondered about how the turkeys that many of us buy at the grocery store evolved from the turkeys that were being raised on family farms before commercialized turkey breeding became common? Today, I learned a little about the history of the turkey. Be forewarned though, as fascinating as this information is, it may not be great dinner table conversation on Thanksgiving because no one really wants to talk about Mr. Butterball’s genealogy and history while enjoying … Continue reading

Weddings Change Kinship Terms

Weddings are special. This is one occasion where you can expect to see plenty of relatives. For genealogists, weddings are an opportunity to figure out the proper kinship terms for complex family relationships. How do all of these people relate to you? Less than a week ago, my sister, Mary, got married. She had a beautiful, somewhat traditional, ceremony, and I have never seen her happier. I hope that the happiness that she experienced on her wedding day continues to grow with every year of her marriage. Each couple will put together a wedding that is uniquely special to them. … Continue reading

Family Game Night

Between everyone’s busy schedules it’s important to take some time out once a week to spend together as a family. No distractions! Turn the cell phones off, no TV, no computers, just the family! Pick a night of the week to be a special night to spend just you and the kids. For us growing up, we all knew that Monday night was family night. As we got older and our schedules got busier with school and work, family night became less and less frequent. Now that I have my own family, I’d love to start it up again. Have … Continue reading
