Spotlight on African Adoptions

This week I want to specifically focus on adoptions from Africa. Why Africa? Because there are currently 14 million orphans in Africa and by the year 2010 there will be more than 25 million. This one continent holds more than half of the orphans in the world.

The purpose of the next few days is to put a spotlight on Africa and the huge need of the orphans there. While the number of children waiting for adoption is very high, the continent of Africa also has a fairly low incidence of adoption. Compared to countries like China, Russia and Guatemala that have very high numbers of children adopted each year, African countries barely even scratch the surface. There are a lot of different reasons for this and hopefully this week will help provide the information needed for change to happen.

This week we will explore together the reasons to consider adoption from Africa and the plight of the orphans there. I will also provide you with information on how to get started in adopting from Africa and other ways of getting involved if you can't adopt right now. To give you a more personal look, watch for interviews of other people who have adopted from Africa or who are in the process of adopting from Africa.

Some people might question why I am focusing on this one area of the world. I don't in any way mean to say that the orphans in Africa are any more important than those in other places. However, the situation in Africa is quite desperate and the public is not aware of the need there. When people consider adoption, they very rarely think of Africa. I hope that by placing emphasis on this part of the world that perhaps more people will consider adopting from Africa and perhaps we can begin to make a difference in this large corner of the world.
