What’s Best for a Cat: Inside or Outside?

Did you know that attitudes toward cats are almost completely opposite in the United States verses the United Kingdom? Not the entire thought about cats, but whether or not they should go outside. In America a popular thought is that it’s better to keep the cat inside. Conversely, in Great Britain it’s often considered cruel not to give a cat the option of going outdoors. Our neighbors lived for a while in England. They applied to the RSPCA for a cat and were almost denied because they didn’t have a kitty door that would allow the cat to go inside … Continue reading

Glam Shots for Shelter Animals

Do I look cool/cute enough to take home? I have a horrible addiction: I love to look at pictures of dogs and cats on petfinder.com. I know I shouldn’t, but sometimes I just can’t resist. I’ve always been an avid Petfinder follower. I’ve spent time looking at it since I was in high school, and I found the first two pets of my adult life through the site. At this stage I can reasonably say I’m a Petfinder expert. One thing I’ve learned from Petfinder is the importance of creating a good profile for the pets. I’ve seen some pet … Continue reading

Adoption Leave and Assistance

In my last entry I mentioned doing some research on adoption benefits that employers may offer. If you are planning on pursing adoption you should start your journey by calling your human resource department and see if they offer any. When you are speaking with them be sure to ask if the company offers any financial assistance to pay for the adoption process. Many employers offer paid leave but if your company is not one of the companies that offer it but your company has more than 50 employees they are obligated under the Federal Family Medical Leave Act to … Continue reading

Why Dont We See Grand Ma and Grand Pa

I was driving home from the hospital with the kids after we visited with my husband and I mentioned that their grandmother came to the hospital to visit to see their Dad. The kids asked me why they did not visit with their Grand Parents. Now this is a hard question for me to answer. I know what the reason is but I do not want them to have any negative thoughts about them. Now contrary to everyone’s opinion we never speak ill of the grand parents or other in laws at all. I will not lie to the kids … Continue reading

Kids Are Bonded

We just got the kids progress reports and all of their grades have dropped since my husband was in the hospital. When you look at the lower grades they all correspond to a date that he was hospitalized. The kids are definitely attached to him and I am positive they do not care if they are his biological kids or his adopted kids the only thing they care about is that their DAD is home. Right now while I am sitting here writing all 3 kids and my husband are sitting on the couches eating popcorn, watching movies and cuddling … Continue reading

Nope We Are Adopted

We had a cable company rep come by the house tonight asking for me to switch to their service. The reason I mention it is that she made a comment about how much my oldest son and my daughter look like me. My kids busted out laughing and said how they are adopted. The look on the ladies face was like this was some kind of joke. Like this was an old family trick that we play on everyone and she is just the newest victim. The kids tried to assure her they were all adopted but I still am … Continue reading

Convincing a Child He Will Burn

Even though I just wrote about skin tones and summer skin care for my son who is bi-racial with African American features we still managed to mess up on vacation. George did not think he would sunburn so whenever I gave him the sunscreen he said he was putting it on himself. I made sure everyone had all the sunscreen they needed. George thought it was funny that I was asking him to put it on because as he put it “I’m brown I will not burn”. As part of our family vacation we went tubing down the Comal River … Continue reading

What Kind of Child Would you Like?

So you finished the major part of the adoption application, now on to the hard questions. There is a section in the application asking what type of child you are looking for. I know this sounds like this would be an easy section but honestly it is definitely one of the hardest. The questions range from what age you are looking for, to will you accept a child with disabilities. You and your spouse should put aside some time and start thinking, praying and discussing what you are wanting. Some of the questions you should think about: Do you want … Continue reading

Disney English Learning Centers in China

I know I haven’t been very supportive of Disney’s business deals in China, but recent news from The Washington Post finds me giving at least a partial thumbs up to one of Disney’s latest branding efforts there. In fact, this particular story starts in the city about which I blasted Disney’s efforts to build a new theme park: Shanghai. While there’s not much more news on Disney building its second Chinese theme park there, and whether it’s improved its dealings with the locals it would be displacing, in 2008 Disney did do something good for the city of Shanghai: open … Continue reading

Toys with Secrets

What happen to the days when you could go shopping for a doll and not have to worry about upsetting an entire segment of the population? Parents, whose young daughters are avid American Girl doll fans, listen up: Some vocal historians don’t want you to buy Rebecca Rubin—-the latest member of the American Girl family. Apparently, her name conjures up bad memories for those who were affected by a series of fires in Oregon. Dear, sweet Rebecca Rubin—-the new American Girl doll-—is a nine-year-old growing up in New York City in 1914. She is a daughter of Russian-Jewish immigrants and … Continue reading
