Preparing for a Mission

I went to a missionary farewell this past Sunday. This future missionary just happened to be my husband’s cousin. We don’t see them too often, so it was nice to be able to go hear him speak. I was very impressed by his poise and his ability to give such a great talk pre-mission. He hardly had any notes he was following either. I don’t think I was that well spoken before serving a mission. But, he did a fabulous job, and sounded like a young man that was ready to do what the Lord expected. I went up to … Continue reading

Preparing for Hard Times

This last session of General Conference has several talks that focused on how to survive trials. The talks were on spiritual, emotional, and physical trials. They all talked about the importance of being spiritually prepared to handle the hard times that will come into every person’s life. They also talked about the importance of being physically prepared for trials. One way to be spiritually prepared is to build a network of people that can help you during difficult times. Sometimes you simply need a shoulder to cry on, or a friend to drop in and check up on you. Other … Continue reading

It is nearly time to send your young woman off to college, if she graduated this year. Typical High School Course of Study: Language Arts Part 1

Four years of language arts classes are required to complete high school. There really is not much variety in the language arts choices, as you need to show that you took 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, and 12th grade language arts to show you have earned a “diploma”. Of course, classes can be taken at a general or advanced level, and also at community college or AP levels as well. Ninth grade Language arts are composed primarily of grammar skills and poetry, and every day skills. Everyday skills a student should have are proofreading, reading the newspaper, analyzing propaganda, … Continue reading

Cultivating Your Testimony

Testimonies are very fragile. They need to be cultivated on a daily basis. There are times when it seems that you are strong, but seem to forget the need to continually nourish your testimony. It is also easy to push your testimony to the back burner as you struggle to meet the daily demands of being a parent. The simple fact is that the most important thing you can do each day is to nourish your testimony. You can do this by studying the scriptures and praying. Of course your children needs must be met, so you may need to … Continue reading

Preparing for General Conference

Conference is just a week away. I love the messages that we receive from conference. As a child my mother would only make us watch the Sunday morning session of conference, but as I grew older I began to listen to conference more each year. I remember my junior and senior years of high school were the years that I began to realize that the messages spoke directly to my life. I also began to realize that the spoke directly to everyone who listened. The wonderful thing about conference is that the messages are for us at this time. As … Continue reading

Choosing the Best for Your Family

Each day as parents we make choices that will affect our children for years to come. The way we prioritize our time for family and other activities will directly affect how are children perceive what is truly important. If we are putting the gospel essentials last, it is much more likely that our children will look on the gospel as an afterthought. It is important that you take the time periodically to take stock of where you are and make an corrections that you need to. You should examine how effective your family home evening lessons and scripture study times … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Bible Stories

This week’s family home evening lesson is loosely based on “The Miracle of the Holy Bible” by Elder M Russell Ballard. You may want to take time to read this talk and highlight any specific portions that you want to cover with your children. Additionally you may want to spend some time preparing your children for conference. You may want to emphasize that the stories and counsel given in conference are just the same as when the prophets in the Bible spoke to the people of their time. You may also want to ask your children to come prepared to … Continue reading
