Overdue Intro From A New SP Blogger

Yes, my introduction is long overdue. As one of the new Single Parenting bloggers, I’ve wanted to say hello to Jacky Gamble who’s another SP blogger, and to everyone here at Families.com, but I’ve been so intently focused on writing informative pieces that this kept slipping my mind. Here I am at last. I’ve been a single parent for about 7 years now. After my second divorce I truly felt it was better to go it alone with my five daughters. It seemed apparent that I hadn’t chosen husbands wisely, so it was high time for me to get out … Continue reading

Single Parenting: “That’s Not the Way Mommy (Daddy) Does It”

I am sure that you have heard these phrases before…”That’s not the way Mommy does it” or “Daddy doesn’t do it like that”. For some of you who may be a little bit sensitive, this will give you a little “pinch” in your chest. I know that this is easier said than done, but try not to let it bother you. Whether you are a single parent or not, it is highly likely that this expression of honesty from your child will arise from their little, puckered up lips. It is not so bad when you are living in the … Continue reading

Unexpected Outcomes of Single Parenting

If I had known way back in the beginning, when I was becoming a parent, what I know about single parenthood–I might have chosen life as a single parent first, instead of going the traditional marriage route. Just writing that out seems somewhat unexpected and shocking, I know. But, I’ve found that there are a lot of unexpected outcomes from my accidental path of single parenting and it hasn’t been that bad of a gig! I’ve heard all the people who say that a family has to be one man and one woman and then all the children live happily … Continue reading

Please see Part One of this blog for updates on adoption blog writers and highlights from late March and early April. In Feeling Different from Family? I muse on finding the right balance between acknowledging our daughters’ different ethnicity and heritage and overemphasizing them. My daughter puts my fears at least temporarily at rest with this zinger—check it out. In How Do You Introduce Yourself to Your Own Child? -Part One: Prepare Them I talk about things adoptive parents can do, even from a distance, to prepare their child for the transition, such as sending photos, tapes, and even a … Continue reading

Preferred Parent?

It is normal for any parent to feel jealousy if a child seems to bond with someone else more easily than with them. Perhaps those feelings are exacerbated for adoptive parents who’ve waited a long time to be parents and who may secretly wonder if they are missing some primal biological connection. But it’s important to keep the situation in perspective. In reality, all children, adopted or not, will go through periods of seeming to prefer one parent over another. One common reason is simply time spent together. This works both ways. Naturally a child may bond first to the … Continue reading

Insurance Blog Week In Review March 1- 5, 2007

Insurance Term Of The Week: The Insurance Application I am surviving surgery and getting back to the keyboard. It’s amazing how much control insurance companies have over the amount and type of medical treatment and care a person receives. I have always been confused when my doctors tell me they would like me to stay another day in the hospital, but because I am doing so well insurance won’t approve another day. The better a patient does, the less time they should need in the care of the hospital. There are of course always, exceptions to the rules and ways … Continue reading

Step-parenthood and the Holidays

You adore your spouse. His or her kids are great too. The ex? Well, maybe not so much. Even if you generally have a civil relationship with your spouse’s ex, things may very well get tense when the holidays roll around. Being a step-parent isn’t always easy. It requires a lot of patience. I commend those who do it well. For those of you who may not feel like it’s going so great, I have a couple tips that might help. Do not Enable Your Spouse If your husband or wife engages in an unhealthy competition in regard to the … Continue reading

Boppy Newborn Loungers Have Been Recalled

Boppy is a well known brand that sells a variety of products, including baby carriers, nursing pillows, and Boppy Loungers. Boppy announced that a safety recall alert has been placed on their Newborn Loungers. This is important for parents of newborns to know about. The Preschool TV Battle is Heating Up

Your preschooler may be more powerful than you think. At least when it comes to watching television. According to Nielsen Media Research, children ages 2 to 5 spend an average of 32 hours in front of a TV each week. For cable networks this means big business.  In the past five years, a slew of channels dedicated to preschool programming have inundated the market.  Since 2000, Nick Jr. has continually garnered the highest Nielsen ratings.  The Viacom-owned channel is dedicated solely to preschool children and is home of the mega-hit show “Dora the Explorer.” Riding the wave of popularity with … Continue reading
