National Adoption Month 2010

November is National Adoption Month! I won’t go into the history or anything, since that has already been explained quite well in a previous post. I will say that I didn’t even realize myself that there was such a thing until this week! I arrived home from work on Monday to find a post put out by the Child Welfare Information Gateway about National Adoption Month showing up in my Facebook news feed! Had I known that this was coming up, I would have had a post about it ready by November 1st. I have now been made aware! So, … Continue reading

National Adoption Day this Saturday

Each November is National Adoption Month. Many adoption organizations and adoptive parent groups have activities. But in recent years the centerpiece of National Adoption Month has been National Adoption Day, when adoptions are celebrated in a festive manner. This year National Adoption Day is this coming Saturday, November 21st. It will be the tenth annual National Adoption Day. Courts in every state and in Puerto Rico will process and celebrate the adoption finalizations of children from the U.S. foster care system who now have a permanent family through adoption. Many of these events will have a celebration following—sometimes for the … Continue reading

National Adoption Month 2008

National Adoption Month is bringing a permanent home to approximately 3, 500 foster children in the U.S. this year. National Adoption Month awareness activities are credited with helping more than 20,000 children find homes in the past nine years. President Bush has proclaimed November to be National Adoption Month. His proclamation urged Americans to celebrate adoptive families in general and in particular, to consider how to find homes for the country’s foster children. This year, adoption agencies have put a special emphasis on adopting older children and teens from foster care. Some suggestions various parent groups and agencies have for … Continue reading

“Saints” in U.S. Adoption

Since some Christian denominations recognize today as All Saints’ Day (a day to honor role models past and present, living and dead), I decided to do a bit of research on people who have had a great impact on adoption. Of course this list could include many, many people. I hope that holding up a few will reflect honor on all of those who continue to work for children and families. The U.S. Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute established the annual “Angels in Adoption” awards and gala to honor the unsung heroes from all 50 states who have enriched the … Continue reading

Adoption Day

We had been fostering our children with the intent to adopt them for eighteen months. We had satisfied every requirement of the state adoption system. It was much harder than it should have been. It was finally time to go to court to finalize. I am a retired lawyer and I know what a crowded courtroom can look like, but this was unbelievable. The week before had been Thanksgiving week, meaning that there were three days worth of matters before the juvenile court on this day. There were a number of nurses present to testify, which usually signifies that there … Continue reading

The Campaign to Encourage Adoption of Teens from Foster Care

November is National Adoption Awareness Month and this year the theme is: “You don’t have to be perfect to be a perfect parent. There are thousands of teens in foster care who would love to put up with you.” Every year an estimated 300,000 children in the United States enter the foster care system. The current reports indicate there are 518,000 children in the foster care system today and approximately 118,000 are waiting for an adoptive family. Each year nearly 9,000 foster children “age out” of the system without having a family to call their own permanently. No family to … Continue reading

November is National Adoption Awareness Month.

Every year in the United States, the month of November is set aside to promote awareness about the adoption of children from the foster care system. National Adoption Month, has been celebrated for over 20-years and started in May 1976, when Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis issued the first state Adoption Week proclamation. Later in the same year 1976 President Gerald Ford officially proclaimed National Adoption week by way of a letter to the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC) conference. During the following years, Adoption Week was observed during the week of Thanksgiving in November. In 1986, NACAC coordinated … Continue reading
