Being Frugal Is A Way Of Life – New FL Blogger Intro

Finally, I’m writing my Frugal Living introduction post. Better late than never, I always say. I wanted to say hello to my fellow FL living blogger Mary Ann Romans, and all of Families.com new bloggers. Since starting with this website about a month ago I’ve been having a lot of fun writing in my various topics. Being able to share and learn is a wonderful thing. As the title of my blog today states, being frugal truly is a way of life, not just one area of it. Many times someone may start out counting pennies in the area of … Continue reading

Why No One Thing Should Be My Whole Life

I am sure you have heard people say things like: “My job is my life” or “My children are my whole life.” While in most cases, I think they are just trying to stress how important and strongly committed they are to their job, spouse, kids, cats, etc. I think there really are strong reasons NOT to make one thing one’s entire reason for living… I have made no bones about the fact that I am a dedicated mom–I LOVE being a mother and it is a central, grounding reality to my life and it has been for nearly two … Continue reading

Married to a Ghost Hunter: My Interview with Mrs. Hawes – The Answers

If you’ve been following this three part series, you’ve been with me as we progressed from Making Marriages Last: What’s It Going to Take? My Interview with Mrs. Hawes to Married to a Ghost Hunter: My Interview with Mrs. Hawes – The Questions. Now we’ve reached the end, the part where we get some answers. Acknowledgment But before you read Mrs. Hawes’ response, bear this in mind: all relationships encounter outside influences. Some are small, some are large, some don’t make much impact, some can be catastrophic. Mrs. Hawes is an amazing, ultra-supportive wife who should be applauded. In the … Continue reading

My Passion Has Changed

Since my wife and I adopted five boys, the things that I have a passion for have changed significantly. My passions before were for the things that most people are passionate about. I have discovered that doing the task that I have chosen consumes my sentiments, emotions, and excitement. For the last fifty years, I have been very passionate about sports. I would plan all of my activities around the “big game”. My allegiance to the sports teams of my alma mater has consumed much of my time and emotions. This year, I did not know which teams were in … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog’s New Millenium

Good morning! Welcome to our 1,000th post here in the marriage blog and let me tell you, it feels so weird to say we’ve been here for a 1000 different entries tackling everything from wedding planning to problem solving to dating and more. It’s been a real pleasure for me to be writing for this topic for nearly a year now and to share it with such an awesome co-blogger as Sherry Holetzky. With that in mind, we thought we’d offer a small treat for our 1,000th blog and we interviewed each other. So without further ado, let me present … Continue reading

The Difference between a Job and a Career

Do you have a job or a career? You might think there isn’t a difference between the two but there really is. Figuring out where you are might help determine the next steps you need to take. A job is generally something you do temporarily. It may not have anything to do with what you are truly gifted at or what you would really like to do. You generally don’t expect to last long doing it. On the other hand, a career tends to move you toward your ultimate goal. It is something you plan on sticking with. Of course, … Continue reading

Selecting a Theme

My neighbor recently completed a 30-page scrapbook titled: “Recipes and Memories.” It features a slew of family recipes handed down from generation to generation. The layouts also include personal stories that detail why the dishes became family favorites. The book looks amazing. There is no doubt that she spent an incredible amount of time crafting it. In fact, she revealed that it took her a lot longer to put together than she had anticipated because she had to interview fellow family members in order to get the recipes and the stories behind the dishes. When I asked her what theme … Continue reading

Learning through Example

Parents are the biggest influence on a child’s life. A parent’s job is to mold and shape a child to function productively in society. While, family values vary from family to family, most want at the core the same things for their children. I have yet to meet a well intentioned parent who did not want a happy, compassionate, well-rounded, and wise child. We may want a doctor or a lawyer in the family but above all we want healthy and happy children. We also want children who show proper discernment and made good decisions in reference to time management. … Continue reading

No Wire Hangers

No, no, I am not talking about the Joan Crawford tirade “I told you! No wire hangers, ever!” No Wire Hangers is the name of a green home organizing business located in Los Angeles and owned by Julie Naylon. Julie is a professional organizer who is also passionate about being eco-friendly. A lot of people want to be green, but may stop short because they aren’t exactly sure what to do (and don’t read my blog!). Julie helps them lead a “more ecologically minded lifestyle.” Julie grew up concerned about the environment, but ended up in the entertainment business after … Continue reading

The Way out of Despair

Lamentations is not exactly the book you expect to find hope and encouragement. Its very name implies otherwise and yet there are some great verses filled with hope and joy. The writer of Lamentations is not identified, though many believe it was Jeremiah. If you read Jeremiah and all that happened to him and read Lamentations with that in mind, it’s more than likely. The writer of Lamentations was doing it hard. He felt he had been given suffering and affliction by God, Lamentations 3:1. He felt completely in the dark, Lamentations 3:2. In his view God had repeatedly turned … Continue reading
