So Not My World

I barely have time to wash my hair in the morning, let alone shave my legs on a daily basis. So, how then is it possible for some moms to find time to post DIY tutorials featuring step-by-step instructions on how to create crocheted cozies for disposable Scotch Tape dispensers on YouTube? Pretty, little, intricately handcrafted covers for 99-cent tape dispensers that are designed to be THROWN AWAY. The tape dispensers that is. Clearly, you want to reuse the cuddly soft cozy you created to warm the cold plastic covering and disguise the unsightly green tartan plaid insert of any … Continue reading

Raising Compassionate Children

I want my daughter to be a loving, compassionate human being. Not always the easiest thing to foster. Children are naturally selfish, it’s how they are wired, we have to teach them to be compassionate. As a single mother I try to remember that as long as my daughter is a good person people won’t remember if my house was clean. There are so many ways to teach kindness and compassion but really, children learn what they live, if you want them to be kind, model kindness. Do your kids tease each other? Of course they do, they are children. … Continue reading

Do You Rank Passions?

I’ve tried my best to move out of the ranking game. When I was a child, I loved to rank people. This is natural. Smarter than me, not quite as good as I am in math. Faster than I am, definitely slower. Better at climbing trees, not as good as getting across the monkey bars. I’ve realized that even though I realize as an adult that everyone has their wonderful, personal talents, I still rank skills. As my daughter moves into “academic” topics such as math, I realize that her enthusiasm for certain things makes me feel quite proud, while … Continue reading

Encourage Teens to Pursue a Career They Are Passionate About

(My son in his Civil Air Patrol uniform) As I am writing this, my 17-year-old son has just left for his first official day of work. After eight months of looking, he finally landed a job. Of course it was with the help of my husband, who is the manager at a store that belongs to a large grocery chain in our city. He put in the word and my son was hired. Yes, it helps to know someone. My husband waited this long to play the card because he was worried that our son would end up like him. … Continue reading

My First Mammogram

So if you have never had a mammogram than you have never had a “boobie pancake”, before I had mine everyone lied to me. They all told me it wasn’t bad, yeah right!!! I am going to be honest I guess there could have been things that were worse but, off the top of my head I cannot think of what it would be. I am not positive who invented the mammogram but I am convinced either it was a man or a female into pain. Here is how my day went… First, my husband came because I think he … Continue reading

My passion for this cause…

It’s becoming irrational. I wish I could fully express it, I wish I could make you understand, and I wish I could make you feel it too. I mentioned in an earlier post that I remember, from my childhood, wondering why more people didn’t adopt. I remember having the understanding that there were children who desperately needed homes and not understanding why more people didn’t take them in. I remember discussing adoption with my husband. I remember when we realized that we were in a position to do this, that we had reached a point where we felt ready, and … Continue reading

When Your Passion Becomes Your Job

If anyone had told me even a year ago that my passion would become my job, I would have said you were nuts. While I would like to say that I had confidence in myself, I think I did only to a certain degree. I was a stay-at-home mom for all three of my children. In addition, I was a homeschooler for a period of five years. It wasn’t until my children entered kindergarten, 2nd grade and 5th grade that they began formal school. Before I had children I worked in an office. I started off as a secretary, which … Continue reading

New Genealogy Blogger

Hello, my name is Jacky Gamble, and I am a genealogy addict. I am also the newest genealogy blogger at Families.com. I have already posted a couple of blogs here, but before I go any further I should tell you a bit about me, and why I chose to blog about genealogy. Genealogy is one of my passions. I began researching my own family tree back in 2003 because I was curious to find out how many relatives were in my mother’s family (her grandparents had 11 children, and their children had children, and so on). I wasn’t expecting to … Continue reading
