My Adoption Journey - An Introduction
by Shoshanna Grey | More from this Blogger
My name is Rachel Whitmire and I am now one of the regular bloggers for Families.com on the subject of Adoption. I have been working for Families.com for a few months now and you can see my past blogs under Employment, Marriage and Adoption.
I wanted to tell you a little about myself. My "day job" is as a social worker for Goodwill Industries and I also do a lot of freelance writing. Someday maybe I can do that full time. I have been married for almost 5 years to my wonderful husband, Scott. In my spare time I love to read, watch romantic comedies and play the piano. I also have two cats that I spoil as much as possible.
Adoption is something that I have wanted to do since I was a teenager. My heart always broke when I heard stories about children waiting in foster care here in the states or in orphanages in other countries. Somehow, I just always knew I would adopt. After I got married, my husband and I decided that we wanted to adopt, but that we would pursue that after we had one or two biological children. However, life doesn't always work out the way you think it will and we had trouble getting pregnant. Instead of pursuing reproductive therapies, we took it as confirmation that we should pursue adoption.
For us, there really wasn't much of a discussion on what type of adoption. International adoption just seemed to be the right thing for us. We settled on Guatemala and very soon accepted the referral of a baby boy named Erick.
It was love at first sight with Erick and the four months that we worked on his adoption were some of the happiest we have encountered. Then, we received the devastating news that we Erick had passed away. The grief was indescribable. Even though we had never met him, he truly was a child of our hearts.
Though we were grieving, the loss of Erick did not stop us from wanting to adopt. Erick will always be our first child, but we always knew there would be more. We asked for a new referral and soon received the pictures and information about another baby boy. We decided to name him Jayden. We are currently updating our paperwork and it is our hope that his adoption process will be complete in July.
I am very excited to be writing for you about Adoption. This is truly my passion and I hope that I can provide a resouce and encouragement to those of you who are also interested in adoption.
Thanks for reading and happy adopting!
