Little Miss Spider

The beautifully illustrated book titled Little Miss Spider by David Kirk is a story of a determined little spider that emerges from her egg to find herself abandon by her mother. She searches and searches until she happens upon a beetle named Betty who offers to help her. The story continues with the search for the mother spider until brave beetle Betty finds herself rescuing little Miss Spider from the mouth of a predator. At this point Miss Spider recognizes that she has in fact found her mother; her mother is the one that has loved and protected her.

Following along with the television series produced by Nelvana Limited titled, Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends, I learn Miss Spider is not just an adoptee but an adoptive parent too. With various insects living under her and her husband's care, it paints a picture of a diverse and loving adoptive/biological home; each insect being unique with special talents and limitations.

What I love about this book series and television series is how it shows some relation to state adoptions. Many children who've been placed through state adoptions have endured abandonment and rough starts. Many children do have to fend for themselves until someone like the beetle Betty is able to come and provide them with a safe home. The television series shares some of the feelings Miss Spider's adopted children deal with in regard to their placements. These feelings include: loss of birth family, missing a sibling, and being on the lookout for birth family.

The Miss Spider series is a wonderful portrayal of a loving and functioning family being formed out of some unfortunate situations. From, "Where is my mother?" to, "I looked for my mom, and I found you at last," this story is one that I hope will touch your heart as it did mine.

Lisa, this sounds like a fun story for young adoptees and others children. I know of David's Kirks' earlier writings. I believe he is an adoptive father and done some scholarly research on adoption. Thanks! Jody
