Hope for Our Children

I had a critical illness when I was a baby. I had to have a tracheotomy; I see the scar in the mirror every morning. But the real problem was fever. It stayed too high day after day. This occurred in the late forties when the medicine available was not nearly as effective as it is today.

There were three nurses that worked eight hour shifts in my hospital room. When they went off duty, one of them left her cap and the other two took their caps with them. My mother asked one of them about this and found out that the two did not think I would be alive the next day.

It was a Roman Catholic hospital and the nuns were praying night and day. My parents made a list of all the people they knew and sent each of them a telegram asking that they pray for me.

When things seemed to be as bad as it could get, a little old lady from our church came into the room and announced that she had just found out from God that my fever was about to break and that I would survive. Shortly after her message, the fever broke and I quickly recovered.

I do believe in miracles because I heard this story many times. My mother would tell me that the Creator of the universe looked down from His throne and changed the course of human events on this earth regarding me. I do not recall a time in my life when I did not believe that God can miraculously heal.

We have adopted five damaged little boys from the foster system. When they arrived at our house, they were really traumatized. For the first few months, there were moments that were scary. I could write many pages detailing the progress that they have made.

People have told us, or at least implied, that we are crazy to take on this task. But we serve a Mighty God who has healing in His hands and I firmly believe that each of our boys will someday have a testimony of complete restoration. I will remind them about it often.

I also believe that when God restored me to life, He had our little boys in mind. One of the reasons that my life was spared was to be here to be a father to five fatherless boys almost 60 years later. Our boys will prosper; they will have an abundant life.

We've been told we were crazy too! I think our well meaning friends just don't understand that God has a purpose for all of us, we are just lucky enough to know what it is. Art

Righton, Art. As usual, you hit the nail on the head. They don't know what they are missing.
