Talking with Children About Special Needs

Many children who are adopted have some special needs. Children adopted from the foster care system may show emotional and behavioral needs related to neglect or frequent separations (although most of these kids do very well, contrary to the media focus on problems).

I'd somehow always thought I'd adopt a child with a physical special need. My husband and I were open to correctable medical conditions. On the photolistings most agencies maintain, we saw the profile of a little girl with congenital cataracts and a cleft palate.

She was released from residential treatment a few days ago. It was a very long and short, nearly 90-days. All of the important family days of celebration happened while she was housed by outsiders with "education" along with other dramatic children--with desperate parents.

What comes to mind when you think of "special needs"? In the adoption world, a child with "special needs" is one with any condition or situation which makes them harder to place in a family. They could be a large sibling group, older, or simply boys.

Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) more commonly diagnosed in adopted children? One study published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology found that of 808 adopted children, ages 4-18 years, 21 percent had enough behavioral symptoms to qualify for a diagnosis of ADHD.
