Ask a Baby Blogger: Common Questions

I thought I would take this time to answer some of the more common questions about babies, toddlers and preschoolers that I have been asked lately. Hopefully you will find answers to your questions here. If not, please ask away. I can be reached through the comments at the end of any of my blog posts, or through private messages. You may also see me hanging around the forums. I also want to mention that the forums are a great place to get all sorts of advice from other parents and experts. When can I give my baby water? Babies … Continue reading

Caring for the Poor

Twenty years ago, I was shifting my ministry focus from the Texas prisons to the streets of the inner city. My wife wanted to tag along and take our three children. After church one Sunday afternoon, we bought a lot of bread, peanut butter, apples, and bottles of water. We made fifty sack lunches. We set out for the area of the old Star of Hope men’s shelter in downtown Houston. (The Astros baseball stadium now occupies the area.) The plan was to hand out sack lunches and talk to as many people as we could, maybe even pray with … Continue reading

Caring For the Elderly: The Health Police

Kristyn wrote a great article a few weeks ago about being the Blood Sugar Police. It really struck a chord with me because while she cares for a son with diabetes, I am helping care for a grandmother with diabetes. I live with my eighty year old grandmother, and am one of her primary caretakers. We have good days and bad days… and the bad days can be really bad. “Why don’t you just leave an old lady alone to die?” That’s my favorite quote. (Not really.) It’s what she says when someone is nagging her to take her medicine, … Continue reading

Judge in Florida Rules Medicaid Must Cover ABA

A judge in Florida has ruled that Florida’s Medicaid insurance program must cover the cost of applied behavioral analysis therapy for children who have an autism spectrum disorder. This ruling could, potentially, lead the way for other states to include coverage for ABA in their Medicaid programs. Applied behavioral analysis is also called ABA. It is a psychological form of treatment that is very necessary for children who have an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This form of therapy is designed to improve the child’s behavior, language, and cognitive development. Kids who receive ABA therapy will improve in their ability to … Continue reading

Can People Change?

Do you believe people can change? By people I mean your ex husband. After a divorce it’s hard to get along with this man you used to love. I know I felt like my ex husband had changed in ways that robbed me of my happiness and I was mad about it. In the beginning sometimes that anger just ate me up inside but I finally had to let go of it, for me, not for him. There is so much bitterness after a divorce. Maybe your ex husband has done some things that make it impossible for you to … Continue reading

Sunday at Tiffany’s Book Review by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet

Do you remember ever having an imaginary friend? What if that imaginary friend showed up again, decades later, and you discovered that not only was he real, but he was everything you ever dreamed about, your one true love? The question is, of course, could you have him, or would he just disappear again? That is just what happened to Jane Margaux, who spent many lonely days as a poor little rich girl who was neglected by her popular mother, lonely that is until Michael comes along. Jane is the only one who can see Michael, but that doesn’t matter. … Continue reading

Buying Pet Medication Online

I don’t usually have a lot of deals to post here. That’s because the majority of discounted pet items I see are too localized: coupons in the local Penny Saver, sales specifically at my branch of Petco, that sort of thing. This weekend I made my annual bulk purchase of our various pet medications and treatments. Then it occurred to me that I’ve been using discount websites for pet purchases for years now and I’ve never remembered to share the scoop. If you’re a pet owner I’m sure you’ve heard it before; when buying your flea treatments, heartworm medications, and … Continue reading

Finding my purpose

Do you ever wonder if things really do happen for a reason? I know that’s one of those over-used and sometimes obnoxious phrases… brought out only when something bad happens and nobody can explain why, right? And for many of you it does absolutely no good to hear it when you are actually in need of believing it. When you’re really down, when you’re hurting, when you’re depressed; you just wish things could be better, you don’t care if there is a reason for what happened. I’m going to get a little personal here; more than normal. I have been … Continue reading

What Do Stay At Home Parents Need From a Home-Based Business Opportunity?

Not all home-based business opportunities are created equal, and since every person’s needs are unique, there is no single home-based business opportunity that can claim that it is a perfect fit for everyone. If you take the time to assess your needs thoroughly before you choose which home-based business opportunity or opportunities to pursue, you may avoid pouring time and money into business ventures that end up being a poor fit for you. Parents that would like to work from home are likely to have needs that may be different from other home-based business owners. This is especially true for … Continue reading
