Author Review: Eleanor Alice Burford Hibbert

I’d never heard of Eleanor Alice Burford Hibbert until I prepared to write this author review, but I had certainly heard of Victoria Holt, Jean Plaidy, and Phillippa Carr. I knew they were all the same woman, but I didn’t know who that woman was until I looked it up. Eleanor Alice Burford was born in Kensington in 1906. She learned how to read at the age of four and devoured every book she could find. She had inherited her love of reading from her father, himself a bibliophile. She attended a business college and learned secretarial skills, being put … Continue reading

Book Review: Beyond the Blue

“Beyond the Blue”, a novel by Leslie Gould Normally, we review non-fiction books on this blog, but today I wanted to make an exception. This novel was recommended to me by another adoptive mother and after reading it, I wanted to share it with you. Beyond the Blue is the story of two women. The second is a poor, unwed Vietnamese woman named Lan, who comes to the terrible realization that she cannot care for her children. The unique thing about this … Continue reading

More Than Meets the Eye

“Oh my goodness! Look at that strange bird,” I exclaimed while pointing to a black object that kept darting and diving around a sledding hill near our home. “That’s not a bird, Mommy,” replied my 6-year-old. “It’s a helicopter.” Lo and behold my daughter was absolutely right. What I saw as a mutated black buzzard was actually a remote control helicopter being piloted by a neighbor kid. Even with contacts, my 20/500 vision cannot be corrected well enough to compete with my child’s razor-sharp eagle eyes. “I don’t even need binoculars to see,” she added proudly. “My talents are reading, … Continue reading

More Fiction for Summer Reading

In a recent blog, And Now for Something Completely Frivolous, I named some Danielle Steel novels that had adoption-related themes. Steel also has an entire novel devoted to infertility and adoption. Mixed Blessings begins with three weddings on the same day, and follows these couples through the early years of their marriages. I don’t want to give too much of the plot away, but here are some characters you will meet. — A woman in her forties who has adult stepchildren and never thought she wanted babies of her own, suddenly finds herself rethinking that decision. Her new husband, a … Continue reading
