One of the most common reasons that people begin looking into adoption is because of infertility. These individuals may have gone through many months or years of fertility treatments and still not realized their dream of conceiving a child. Often these people who often begin to ask questions about adoption.

If you are coming out of a struggle with infertility and plan to begin an adoption, it is important that you keep a few things in mind:

Do You Want Parenting or a Pregnancy? While there are those who will continue trying to conceive no matter what, there are others who realize that their desire to be parents is much stronger than their desire to achieve a pregnancy. It is important that you make that distinction before you decide to adopt. If you feel that you will not be satisfied without having the experience of being pregnant, then adoption may not be a good option for you.

Take Time To Grieve If you have been trying to become pregnant, then you naturally have dreams stored up about that child that you have hoped to conceive. It is important to acknowledge your feelings about this "fantasy child" and give yourself the time to grieve. Even though that child you wanted to conceive does not exist in reality, that doesn't mean that it did not exist in your heart.

Be Patient With Yourself Adoption is a big decision and that decision can be even more difficult when you are dealing with infertility. Give yourself the time to decide if this is what you want and if this is the best time. Adoption is an amazing thing - just as amazing as conceiving and giving birth to a child - but it is important that you be prepared to enjoy it. If you are still struggling with unresolved feelings about infertility then it is important to work through those so that you can fully embrace adoption when you are ready.
