Boys Will Be Boys

I am so amazed at the difference between my boys and my girl. As a baby, my daughter used to sit and play quietly with a cup and spoon “feeding” her baby doll, while my boys are all rough and tumble play. Even as an 11 month old. My baby has picked up all the truck noises from his big brother. His favorite thing in the world is pushing the fun big trucks around that his older brother has. I keep them hidden under my 3 year old’s bed, but the baby has figured out where they are, and makes … Continue reading

This is Boys on Adolescence

Once I saw a great illustration of the difference between men and women. It was grossly simplistic, of course, but like all great illustrations, it captured the core of so many things in a single image. Actually, there were two images. The first image was of a rectangular box. It was completely covered in dials, knobs, levers, and latches. The heading on the image was “Woman.” The second image was of the same rectangular box — but with only a single on/off switch in the middle. The heading on the image was “Man.” I remember laughing out loud when I … Continue reading

Help, I’m Feeling Overwhelmed with Housework

Most of the time my home is in company-ready condition. It is far from a showcase or spotless, but I can usually open the door to unexpected company without too much embarrassment and at worse, a dish or two in the sink, a couple of toys on the playroom floor, or some mail sitting neatly in the foyer. Today I can’t say that at all. There are toys strewn all over the living room, along with a shopping bag full of presents for a birthday party we are attending, two garbage bags full of boys clothes that were generously given … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: June 2008

June was my first official month posting for the Baby Blog. It has been a great experience. I love learning new things about babies and sharing it with friends. Of course, I could use your help. Whether you are a first-time mom or an experienced mom of a large family, I want to hear from you. Please share your advice, your questions and your comments. On which topics would you like to see more blogs? Meanwhile, take a look at all of the articles we had in June. June 2nd Introducing Babies to Birds Perhaps it is the fact that … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Solve Our Sleeping Issues

Question: I have this problem with my one year old every night. I end up putting him in his crib and letting him cry for 5 to 10 minutes. After this I go in the room like I am the savior and pick him up. He has worn himself out so much from crying that he lays down on my chest and goes to sleep. There has to be a better way. Then his bed time is 10. I need to figure out a way to get him to become tired earlier and to help him go to sleep easier. … Continue reading

How Did I Become the “Hang Out” House?

We are not the Huxtables or the Brady Bunch—that is clear to anyone. Many of you who read these blogs probably have a pretty good idea of the bustling, ordinary-yet-non-traditional, single mom led family that I’ve got going here. I work, a lot, and I definitely don’t see myself as the sweet, caregiving-focused, maternal sort. We don’t live in a mansion with an ever-over-stocked pantry either. So, I’m having a hard time figuring out why there are usually 2-3 extra mouths to feed and extra pairs of shoes by my front door? Now, I’m not really complaining, I just always … Continue reading

How Do You Feed a House Full of Very Big People (at a Moment’s Notice?)

I anticipate that the bulging of my little townhouse won’t last forever, so I am trying to cherish and enjoy it. I imagine that the day will come when what now seems like a rather tight fit will seem huge and like “too much” space. These days, I never know whether I will be feeding myself popcorn and orange juice in front of an old movie, or a half-dozen starving, strapping teenagers! Yesterday evening, I walked into my house to find the living room literally stuffed with teenage boys—okay, there were only three of them but when you take into … Continue reading

New Disney Fragrances—For Boys

I grew up in a house filled with brothers and it’s no secret that their rooms… and more importantly… their bodies didn’t always smell shower fresh. Obviously, this is not a problem exclusive to my brothers because now Disney is coming out with a way for boys to smell their best. So much for the rancid scents of sweat, mud and grass. Disney is rolling out “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Buzz Lightyear” fragrances targeting boys ages 4 to 11 in Latin communities. According to Disney, the products will sell for about $10 to $20 and will be in stores … Continue reading

Out to Eat with All the Boys

It’s very hard for a family with five boys ages two through eight to go out to eat. We have been able to go to Luby’s, but that is when Nancy and I are both feeling very energetic and patient. Little things like having the trays carried to the table by cafeteria staff are a given. The bright side is that with the children’s plate going for $2.99, we can get out cheaper than at a fast food place. Two years ago in a weak moment, we decided that it was time to actually try to go out to dinner. … Continue reading

A House Full of Boys, Part 2

I recently wrote about the traits of little boys and what a household full of them would look like. People have commented favorably about the article but almost everyone pointed out something that had been left off the list. I am going to try to remember all of the suggestions. Boys really like puddles, especially if they are dressed up for church or school. A young male is simply unable to walk around a puddle. There is so much joy in seeing the splashes and feeling your shoes get wet. Will Moms never learn that rainy days and new clothes … Continue reading
